Ancient and modern in the Khorat region: prehistoric and early Khmer sites, old temples and crafts

Saturday 3 May to Sunday 4 May 2008

Following the successful study trip to the Khorat area in January, the Society will conduct a second trip to other sites in the region.  Members will visit a cave with prehistoric paintings (Khao Chan Ngam) and burial sites (Ban Prasart), Dvaravati rock carvings and a Dvaravati sleeping Buddha, the early Khmer ruins of old Khorat, some temples in Khorat itself, the trading centres of Pak Thong Chai (silk) and Dan Kwian (pottery), Wat Na Phra That with its murals, carvings, and library standing in a pond.

  

The group will leave the Society at 8 a.m. on Saturday, 3rd May and expects to return about 9.30 p.m. on Sunday, 4th May.  Members will spend 1 night at Rachaphruk Grand Hotel in Khorat. Prof. Michael Smithies, Editor of JSS and Hon. Member, has been living in the region since his retirement 15 years ago. A contribution of 7,200 Baht is requested to cover transportation, hotel accommodation (2 persons per room) 5 meals, entrance fees to monuments, and donation to the Siam Society.  1,200 Baht extra cost for single room at the hotel. 1,500 Baht extra cost for non-members.
