The Story of…
Denis H., Grandmaster Flash, 808, and RCA...

It's sad to say, but many a traveler on KSR never actually makes it further than the police station of an evening. KhaoSanRoad.com had to intervene. We took a look around to find something worth getting off the strip for - and we came up with RCA... Click here to find out more about RCA, Bangkok, Thailand.

Missing Person…
"A friend of mine, Troy Brovan, has been missing since July 21, 2008. Troy went to Bangkok for a retirement party and has not been seen or heard from since. Troy works for Northwest Airlines in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is about 5'6" tall, and Caucasian. We know that when he first got to BKK he went to the PB Hotel... We have NO pictures. This is not his first visit to Thailand and he previously had a Thai wife. He was in Thailand about a month before his latest trip." If you have seen or heard anything from or about Troy, please contact Debra Witteveen. Let us know, too. Everyone concerned are extremely worried.

"It’s been 20 YEARS since the birth of the HOUSE music movement, so we thought what better way to celebrate that fact and have a good old RAVE up..... Our goal is to recreate those halcyon days of aciiieeed house through QUALITY MUSIC, DECOR and ATMOSPHERE;-)" Click here to learn more about going BACK TO THE SUMMER OF LOVE with SPECTRUM"

Rally…

Found it a bit more difficult to get around the immediate KSR area yesterday? Surprised by the number of people wearing yellow shirts? Well, there was a pro-democracy rally at Democracy Monument led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD). That's probably why!

Earth from Above…

This is the last month of an exhibition of Yann Arthus Bertrand’s aerial photographs. The exhibition, entitled, EARTH FROM ABOVE: AN AERIAL PORTRAIT OF OUR PLANET, started 3 June and finishes 9 September 2008. It’s a great location – outdoors at the Zen Outdoor Arena and Amphitheater Zone, Central World, central Bangkok. It’s great looking at these images outdoors because you are as vulnerable to the climate as the earth itself. Sweating to the point of death or being swamped by rain (or both!) really brings home the environmental message without a slogan in sight. Admission is Monday to Thursday: 10.00 – 22.00 and Friday to Sunday: 10.00 – 23.00. There’s no charge. 120 million people have seen these photographs – you could be one. Make a morning or afternoon of it – visit the Erawan Shrine first (opposite), then do some shopping, and then catch the exhibition.

UBRadio…

UBradio.net is an Internet radio station located at Sripoom Expresso Bar, right on KSR's doorstep! They stream FREE high quality mixes LIVE Worldwide - 24/7. They are "the ultimate Internet source" for the underground music scene, and to learn about what Bangkok has to offer that scene. We are going to try and catch up with these guys soon, but in the meantime, check out their Facebook listing. The station's hard launch is August 9, 2008 at 808 on RCA.

Khao Phra Vihar…
Professor George Coedè, a world renown scholar on Cambodia, said “The temples of ancient Cambodia were the habitations of the gods who animated the temples by their living presence”. To appreciate Khmer temple architecture it is necessary to know something of the rituals surrounding a temple. This is no place to record the intricacies of the god-king worship, even if it were fully known. . . Click here for more...

Nok Air Drops Phuket-Bangkok Flights…
NOK AIR is cutting its daily flights between Bangkok and Phuket from the end of July, along with services to three other destinations. About 20 Nok Air staff at the airport on Phuket are also going to lose their jobs as the aviation industry crisis, fuelled by rising oil costs, impacts on Thai travel nationwide. Wakeboarding in Thailand…

"Daa…" Splash! My friend loses control of his wakeboard and plunges headfirst into the lake. But seconds later he is up, huge smile on his face. "This is awesome," he beams, giving me the thumbs up sign." It's a sultry Saturday morning and I'm sitting in the sunshine beside a sparkling clear blue lake fringed by palm trees and the red sloping roves of temples, which glitter and shine as the dun hits them. Hard to believe that this is just outside Bangkok, but the truth is that a short taxi ride away from the busy capital, this peaceful haven is just waiting to be discovered. Veggie Delight…

Travelling in Thailand can be tough if you're a vegetarian. Your senses are constantly assaulted by the myriad of meats on sticks barbecued on every street corner and the scent of fried chicken fills the air as you wait patiently for a bus to whisk you away. This article points you in the right direction. Click here to find out more about Vegetarian Restaurants around Khao San Road and Bangkok, Thailand.

New and Cheaper Way to KSR…
Kenny writes: "Hi! It seem they now have 556 bus, seem to pass just outside KSR. Democracy Monument Bus Number 556 - Suvarnbhumi - Southern Bus Terminal (Expressway) Bus No.556 connects Suvarnabhumi Airport to Southern Bus Terminal via Yommarat - Democracy Monument - Thammasat University - Pata Department Store - Southern Bus Terminal. Will this be the new and cheaper way to KSR. Thanks!" Nice one Kenny!

Has Anyone Seen These?
"BANGKOK: -- From next month the city will keep 300 bicycles at Sanam Luang and five nearby areas that locals and tourists can use free of charge. Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said Monday that the "Green Bangkok Bike" project was aimed at promoting tourism with exercise and a "green mentality". The cycles will be loaned out from 10am to 9pm on weekdays and from 10am to 8pm on weekends. Initially, Thais will need to provide their ID card and foreigners will have to show their passports . Credit cards and smart cards will be soon used to borrow the bikes, which will also be installed with GPSbased tracking devices. -- The Nation 2008-06-30" Damned if I have seen them yet... Let us know if you have.

Focus on Culture: Thai Superstitions and Beliefs...

When you have been in Thailand for a bit, you are inevitably going to confront Thai superstitions. A local gives you the benefit of his or her encyclopedic knowledge of the subject and offers a range of advice, including which Mor Doo (or Fortune Teller) to see for the best results. As a Westerner, you greet the occasion with a wry smile and store this little anthropological gem in the memory banks for storytelling over a couple of Singhas. When it happens three or four times and you realize that each time its over you leave for the bus stop, while the person you were talking to leaves in a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 or Ferrari Enzo F60, you start to wonder, "Is there something in this?" Kirsty Turner gives us the full SP with her Focus on Culture: Thai Superstitions and Beliefs.

A Visit to the Immigration Office on Suan Phlu…
…isn't that bad really. They are pretty efficient and it's just something you have to do if you want to experience more of Thailand. However, if you are a vegetarian, you might even enjoy it. Click here for more about vegetarian immigration visits.

New Accommodation
If you are looking for the Khao San Road experience of lore, your will have to look high and wide to find somewhere on the actual strip these days. Sometimes you have to look a little further to see what things they way they were... Places catering for people on the move where they remember your name next time they see you! Taewez Guest House is further away from Khao San Road then most of the other guesthouses we feature, but it's still only a 30-minute walk through a pretty interesting neighbourhood to get there. Click here for more about Taewez Guest House.

New Accommodation
Elegantly designed with ambitious architecture, THE NAVALAI RIVER RESORT stands out against a backdrop of classical Thailand. The hotel is located in one of the country's leading historical areas, Phranakorn, meaning "The City" in Thai. This was first a centre of Thai trade 100 years ago. It is conveniently located for the Grand Royal Palace, and only 10-15 minutes' walk form Khao San Road. Situated right next to the river, access by river boat is easy - the hotel is right next to Phra Athit pier. You can walk straight into the hotel from the boat! This hotel has everything; luxury, convenience - and a rooftop swimming pool for your pleasure. Click here to check out Navalai River Resort.
