Foreign Nations Evacuate Nationals
Foreign nations have rushed to evacuate their nationals being stranded in Thailand after anti-government protesters closed down Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports. Click here for more from The Nation's website...

Utapao Airport
A tiny ex-military airbase is being used as an alternative to Bangkok Airport. Some major airlines, including El Al, have revised routes to fly out Utapao International Airport near Pattaya. Of course, travel agents in the Khao San Road area are organizing buses up to Utapao, but they are certainly not leaving at the same frequency they did to Suvarnabhumi, with some buses only leaving at midnight.

Current Situation
Efforts by the Thai police to clear protestors from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport have apparently failed and, according to many reports, up to 100,000 travellers are unable to leave the country. Of course, flights into the country have been cancelled, leaving the travel plans of many in complete tatters. Although there is no violence at the airport, the situation remains protracted and a solution a long way off. Obviously, there is considerable concern for relatives and loved ones unable to leave the country, and we have received a deluge of reports for our Missing Person's pages. To reassure those concerned, the world's media is duty bound to report the facts, and those are that clashes between rival supporters have taken place. Unfortunately, when the see these reports the perception can be that there is ongoing chaos and every street corner is strewn with danger. That really isn't the case. Just to reassure people, although there is obvious need for precaution, Bangkok and Thailand remain generally peaceful, if extremely tense, and we believe your loved ones are not in any immediate danger.

For information on all matters related to the current situation, and for travel in Thailand, your first stop must be the travel advisories offered by your respective embassies. However, the following hotline has been set up for airport enquiries:

(66) 02-1321882 and (66) 02-1321888

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has set up this factsheet which is keeping abreast of current events in Thailand.

Local and international press to look at include:

Local:
Bangkok Post
The Nation

International:
BBC
CNN

We are not really equipped for the avalanche of enquiries we have received recently, which is why we may have not dealt with hotel / guesthouse enquiries as effectively as we should, so apologies for that. However, we will do our best to help people get in touch with loved ones who may be staying on Khao San Road. For this purpose, email me directly or Skype us on khaosanroad.com. For those looking for alternative routes out of the country, visit our travel agents section and contact local travel agencies. There are queues of people waiting for buses on KSR, but demand is being catered for.

Mumbai Terror Attacks
In a world gone increasingly nuts, "terrorists" (it is unclear who the perpetrators were) have been on the rampage in Mumbai, India, killing around 170 people (according to current reports). Foreigners - particularly Americans and British - were specifically targeted, as were members of the city's Jewish community - the local Chabad House was one of 10 sites attacked and put under siege. Another site attacked was Leopold Cafe in the Colaba district of Mumbai, a favourite haunt of backpackers in India, many of whom many were amongst the fatalities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of all those who died in this brutal act. See the above international media for updates on the events there.

Missing Person...

Rainer Kocherscheidt writes: "I'm looking for my step-son SURIYAN NAKNAKA, 19 years old, from Bangkok/Bang Yai, slim, born April 12th. He hasn't checked in at home for more than 3 months. Presumably he has slipped into some sort of (gothic) subculture. We would highly appreciate any information on his whereabouts. If he could just drop his grandmother a line, we would be relieved." Anyone know Suriyan? If so, please send Rainer an email. Click here for more Mission Persons in Thailand and the region.

How to Meet Local People...

It’s amazing – people come to Thailand to broaden their horizons and learn as much as they can about a new culture, and the only interaction they have with the locals is the occasional word with Hlaing as he is tidying up your table... and it’s only on your last day you find out that Hlaing is actually from Rangoon. So, how do you get to meet the locals? Well, intrepid reporter Anne Merritt points us in the right direction. Click here to read “How to Meet Local People”.

Where have U been?

The Old Days on KSR... Pedrito writes: "I echo Pierre's experiences of KSR and PB guest house - couldn't possibly write on a public site exactly what I saw and experienced there. I do remember pool tables with fans above each table - watched one guy lift up the cue after a shot, the cue got caught in the fan, spun around, hit him in the head and knocked him for 6. That was a while ago and times have changed. All seems a bit tame now but still a place I like to visit." Click here for more on the old days on Khao San Road.

Khao San Road Promotions…
John@KSR: Sadly, some of the recent political problems in Thailand have had a negative impact on the number of visitors to the Kingdom. Although I'd never tell people to ignore their embassy's travel advisories, it's a shame not to be in Thailand at this time of year. Fact is, I have been in Bangkok throughout the 'state of emergency' and the biggest problem I encountered during the period was being late for work a couple of times because of political rallies - and that happens on regular occasions anyway. You of course have to make up your own mind, but to help make the decision a bit easier, some of the accommodation outlets around KSR are offering some nice discounts! Check out these promotions so far here: Banglumpoo Place
; Viengtai Hotel; Trang Hotel, Baan Chantra.

Meditation... So many people are interested in this topic, while so few get good advice as to how to receive guidance and proper practice while in Bangkok. This little site has a complete run down of everything happening in Bangkok as far as meditation and related practices are concerned. Little Bangkok Sangha Blog is totally worth delving every now and again just to see what's going on!

Bus... Duzzi writes: "I need to know how and where i have to request a business visa for a thailand citizen for congo Brazzaville." Anyone?

Trying to find a child…
Mike writes: "Help!!! Trying to find Amerasian child born 1975 in Bangkok Thailand. Please inform me of the best way of finding her. Details that I can provide are all from memory. The mother's name is Suphan Phetphakdi, last known address, 4/10 Soi Rajaphan, Bangkok 4 Thailand. Child born 1975 Bangkok, Thailand. The spelling of the last name could be wrong, it may be Phetpakdi and the spelling of the street may be wrong as it's been over 25 years. I know this is not much information, but it's all I have. You have made my day, giving me a little hope that I may find her." Does anyone know of any organizations, or perhaps even government departments that can help people trace "half Thai" children? I remember there was something, but if my memory serves me it was something to do with Vietnam vets - possibly not the right thing. If you know of anyone who can help, let Mike know and let us know, too.

Aquatini for a Treat… If you are looking for a bit of a treat and on the hunt for some decent food, Aquatini might be the answer. Housed in Navalai River Resort, it’s easy enough to get to on foot – just a short walk from KSR – but as it’s right next to right next to Phra Athit Pier, you can walk straight off the boat and into the restaurant... excellent! It offers both Thai or European cuisine, and has a well stocked bar offering well good cocktails. Prices are good, too. Great for special occasions.

Koh Tao on steroids…
A new site on Koh Tao hit the World Wide thingymajig recently. Nicely laid out, it's got the full SP on accommodation (budget to exclusive), plenty of info about Koh Tao (maps, history, etc.), activities on the island (diving, spas, Thai Boxing, etc.), where to get fed and watered, night clubs... the works actually! Check it out...

Pure Self-indulgence...
These are my sister's plates - enjoy...

More Mex...

Guy and Pat down at Mexican Tartars have added a number of promotions to their mix of great food and hospitality! Margarita Mondays (buy 1, the 2nd is ½ price) Teacher Tuesdays (10% off for teachers) Wicked Wednesdays (free nachos for groups of 4 or more) Tequila Thursdays (15 Baht off all tequila drinks/shots) Free Fiesta Fridays (buy 3 drinks and the 4th is free) Super Saturdays (free chips and salsa with orders of 300 Baht) Settle Your Stomach Sundays (Burrito & Fruit Shake for 175 Baht). Check it out...

UBRadio…

UBradio.net is an Internet radio station located at Sripoom Expresso Bar, right on KSR's doorstep! They stream FREE high quality mixes LIVE Worldwide - 24/7. They are "the ultimate Internet source" for the underground music scene, and it's pretty exciting - worth checking out...
