Traveling China -
do I join a group or go solo?

For
all its beauty, mystery, and excitement, China is
one heck of an intimidating mass of land. The country
itself is huge and diverse; the languages aren't even
remotely familiar for most Westerners, and China's
self-described "smaller cities" boast several million
people. So where does a traveler begin? Dozens of
tour companies have made a nice bundle on this intimidation,
selling organized tours to curious-but-overwhelmed
travelers. At first glance, a potential traveler might
be tempted to do the same. After all, China doesn't
have the compact size of Japan, or the backpacker
circuit of Southeast Asia. Here, KSR gives you the
low-down on traveling China, with a group or with
oneself. Anne Merritt gives us all we need
to make a decision. Read Traveling
China.
Colonial Kuala Lumpur

It
may come as a surprise to many people that Kuala Lumpur
is in fact the youngest capital city in South East
Asia. It's founding can be dated back to 1857 when
the Sultan of Selangor, influenced by the money to
be made from tin mining in the neighbouring state
of Perak, sent a group of Chinese laborers up the
River Klang to start prospecting. Those hardy pioneers
landed at the confluence of the Rivers Klang and Gombak,
at the place where the Masjid Jamek now sits, and
started hacking away at the jungle that covered the
area. Antony Sutton gives us a deep insight into this
fascinating part of tyhe world. Click here for more

Kuala Lumpur.

Hit Men at Zest!

If you’re hanging out on Khaosan Road in the evening
and looking for something different to do, check out
hot new band Hit Men. The four piece band is accompanied
by two regular guest performers including Steven Noake
(Spider), formerly with The RGB band. A step apart
from most bands in Bangkok, these guys really hit
the spot, giving a fresh and funky flavor to well-loved
blues, reggae, rock and soul classics. Smooth Canadian
singer and guitarist Mon-T is the ideal front man,
performing with confidence and style. Featuring a
live saxophone, groovy guitars and smoking hot drumming,
Hit Men have been playing together for just two months
and are already pretty tight. Catch the Hit Men on
Tuesday and Sunday evenings in Mulligan’s bar above
Buddy Lodge and on Wednesdays in Zest (formerly DOS).

Where do you worship?
Francis Lopez

Bring me the head
of... Bernie... What was his name?

Take an idle stroll around Bangkok’s main thoroughfares
and it becomes patently obvious, very quickly, that
BNE
has, in fact, been here. What is it all about? Some
say it is a guerilla marketing strategy gone wildly
amiss. Others believe they are a result of alien intervention
(note the crop circles below the BNE lettering). More
still believe it’s a CIA experiment in mind control,
while a little known Japanese cult believe it’s all
three together. Whatever it is, BNE stickers and graffiti
are a worldwide phenomenon that has taken a firm hold
of Bangkok and a number of major cities. In fact San
Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was so sick and tired
of BNE that he offered a 2,500 dollar award for “BNE
capture” – whatever that means!! Well, never one
to shy away from our civic responsibility, we are
offering a fish supper for two at Oh
My Cod! on Rambuttri Road for anyone who can provide
information leading to a photograph of BNE holding
his or her passport or driving license (which clearly
says "BNE" as his/her name).
Rain
Stops Play...

The Khao San Club Crawl has taken a sabbatical. It’s
just too difficult to get people out and about during
the rainy season so we are taking a break until it
dries up… For anyone interested in taking part later
in the year, let
us know and we’ll get back to you later in the
year.

on Khao san road, "SHIVA FASHION". I need more, but
can not find there website. Can you help me. Thank
you Thomas." Let Thomas know - let

Penang, Malaysia

"The picturesque island of Penang is situated
in northern Malaysia, just across the border from
Thailand. There are many reasons to visit Penang.
With its beautiful beaches, Kek Lok Si - perhaps the
largest and finest Buddhist temple in Asia - and spectacular
scenery, it is easy to see why the island has earned
the nickname Pearl of the Orient." Kirsty Turner
shows us around. Click here for her article on Penang,
Malaysia.
Cafe Democ - Back to the Source...

Khao San Road is renowned as one of the best places
for nightlife both in the Bangkok capital and elsewhere
in the Kingdom of Thailand. Sitting alongside excellent
restaurants and pubs, KSR's clubs now rank parallel
with Sukhumvit 11 haunts as some of THE places to
visit when in town. Given the importance of the strip's
role in catering to global club officiados, the fact
that Cafe Democ is seldom included in any foreign
clubber's itinerary remains a mystery wrapped in an
enigma. Click here for more about Cafe
Democ, near Khaosan Road, Bangkok, Thailand.
Ancient City...

"There are so many interesting places to explore
in Thailand that trying to visit them all can take
many months, if not years. One good solution to this
is the Ancient City, which contains 116 replica monuments,
buildings and shrines other places of interest in
Thailand. Officially named Muang Boran in Thai, the
Ancient City covers 320 acres and is arranged in the
shape of Thailand." Kirsty Turner takes us to
the Ancient
City, Thailand.
The Old Days on KSR...
Matt Lawson (no email) writes: "My first experience
of Kao San was in 1986 with my friend Vincent Smarro.
Stayed at the PB (which appears to be gone now...but
no surprise there) and within moments of entering
was attacked by the owner\'s pet gibbon who occupied
the territory between the snooker hall and the accommodation.
The little guy was chained (at a height of about 2m)
to a wire between the two building. This allowed him
a couple of metres of travel and he entertained himself
by welcoming the new guests by leaping onto their
unsuspecting heads. The established guests learned
to crouch while passing through his domain. The owner
of the PB was an expert Scrabble player and he made
short work of almost any farang who deigned to play
on a rainy night (Yes, he beat me too but I was playing
him and Singha beer so it was unfair)." Click

San Road in the old days...

After much ado, the BTS Skytrain (elevated railway)
now reaches Thonburi
- not sure what the ferry operators will think of
that, but at least both sides of Bangkok are now joined.
