Bangkok Bar
Spotted this flyer posted around several spots on Khao San Road - looks promising! Does anyone know their new website address is...? Let us know...

Don't know who Dr. Dragon is but it's a cool sounding name anyway. If anyway has the Full SP on this place, let us know...

The Lava Club has quickly become one of the 'in' places on Khao San Road. Underneath Bayon Building, you go down some stairs into what is quite a sophisticated place. Great lighting, lasers, and crystal clear sound system - although it's loud, you can still talk over it. The brainchild of two Israeli partners, Lava provides a good mix of locals and Thai youth. Great to see people in shorts and flip-flops dancing next to locals offering bolder fashions statements. Seems to be quite a few foreign staff, including western DJ spinning house with an edge of trance. Prices are a bit steep by Khao San standards - 150 for a regular beer - but it's worth it. A really good place. Check it out!

Balcon Bar
On the roof of Gulliver's Traveler's Tavern

We asked: "Anyone know the score about this place?" Martyn from Coventry came to the rescue:

"The Balcon bar is on top of Gulliver's. You get in via a lift that is situated round the other side of Gulliver's. Is it good? This place rocks... DJ Mee is great and the beer is cheap. The whole atmosphere is superb and well worth a visit!!"

Thanks for keeping us informed Martyn!

Dali Bar
Soi Rambutri

Positioned a bit away from Khao San Road, Dali's Bar is well worth a 5-minute walk. Dali's Bar is unique in Bangkok (at least I haven't seen anything like it). A two-storey townhouse situated on Soi Rambutri, this is the only place in the area with original Salvador Dali paintings on the walls. Downstairs is cozy - room for about 10-15 people.

The bar seems to attract a lot of English teachers, but this might be because Hanchai, the half-Swedish, half-Thai owner used to be an English teacher himself. No food here - only booze! You can get a beer but Dali's specialises in cocktails. Kaet, Hanchai's manageress, mixes about 100 fierce brews detailed in what appears to me to be a completely exhaustive menu of cocktails. 'Regular' cocktails cost 100 Baht. 'Special' cocktails cost 120-150 Baht. We've seen people getting pretty much destroyed after only 2 or 3 of the latter so be warned!

Upstairs the dividing wall between two rooms has literally been demolished to make a single room where a band called 'FLOW' plays every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (click here to see a review of FLOW). There's been no attempt to smarten the place up and it looks all the better for it - you literally watch the band through a big hole in a wall, or you sit on the floor in front of the band as they play. Hanchai is proud of the fact that Dali Bar has become an unofficial Swedish Embassy, although a number of different nationalities frequent (especially when FLOW are playing - between them the band represent 4 different nationalities themselves!). He's a young man with no pretensions - unlike other places around Khao San he actually seems to like the people who come to his bar! Amazingly, he sits and talks with his customers! Good luck to him and his bar…

UPDATE:
Last time I went to see Hanchai his place was closed... although it was Saturday afternoon with no one around. Anyone know the full story? Email us...

Coming into Khao San Road at the Police Station end, the first thing you see is Gulliver's Traveler's Tavern. Check out the bizarre exterior (a Tuk-Tuk is in prominent place above the main door) and what comes to mind is this is a class establishment. And your right - this place rules! A big air-conditioned bar houses food, beer, pool, video, and most of all music! A range of local and imported beers includes Anstil, Cheng and Singha at 60 Baht a bottle, and Becks, Heineken and Carlsberg at 65 Baht a bottle. Korona comes in at 130 Baht. The foreign and Thai food served here is good - 130 Baht for a big burger. The jukebox has current western music and a DJ plays the latest sounds until 2:00 in the morning. With cable television, Gulliver's shows the big football matches and sports events. Happy hour is 15:00-20:00 and you can get spirits and mixers at 49 Baht. A cool place, well recommended!

"Hi !! I spent a lot of time in Bangkok and mostly on Khao San during 1999 and 2000. And must say that Gulliverīs was definetely the coolest place around KS. Nice service, beatiful girls and cool bear (and air-con, huh huh!!). Really a must to see. Of course there were other nice pubs, as well, but this was something special. Missing my next journey to Bangkok and for sure to Gulliverīs.

"We stayed in Bangkok for 10 days last July being our first stop over before reaching Australia where we are now and Gullivers Modern Music bar was the most lively and friendliest bar on Khao San Road. We will return on the way home in June so put the Chang on ice, we're going to Bangkok twice! Hello to Nina, Kat and all the staff at Gullivers, we'll bring your caps back - honest!"

One of the leading pubs on Khao San Road, Suzie Pub is gaining a clientele from Bangkok in general rather than just people from Khao San Road - a genuinely first-rate bar with excellent beers, good food, and a really good atmosphere. Bottled beers and draft beer available - small bottles cost 70 Baht each and a half-liter of draft beer costs 100 Baht. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, between 19:00 and 22:00, buy 2 Amstils and get one free! Pork Fried Rice will cost you 80 Baht, Rice and Green Curry costs 70 Baht. Khun Bon is in charge of this big, wooden pub that has quickly become a center of activity on Khao San. Bang on!

"Suzie pub is the best place Khao San Road. Good atmosphere, good music, nice people. Definitely worth a look!!"

Rob, Nijmegen, Netherlands

"Susies Pub. Probably the best place to shake your booty in all of Bangkok! I just love the thai-youthpeople. Raz"

"Suzie Pub is awesome. I love the music and the people. I had such a great time dancing at Suzie Pub. Everybody that visits Bangkok should go to Suzie Pub. If not for meeting new people, then definately for the food & drinks."
