Run by 'Sarah' and 'Note', this is 'old school' Khao San Road - but you are going to have to walk 15 minutes to find it! They kick off with a cooked Canadian breakfast - 2 eggs, ham, bacon or sausage, home fries and coffee or tea - 80 Baht for the lot. Very much a travelers' retreat, music styles vary from Classic Rock to Blues and House… Other offerings are sandwiches with Deli ingredients - smoked ham, pastrami, blue cheese, feta cheese, etc. only 80 Baht. Fresh breads, salads and freshly brewed coffee. Cocktails at around 80 Baht, the same price as a large Heineken - large Chang comes in at 60 Baht. Tattoo studio upstairs. Nice people - check it out.

Arise... Actually never been (it’s a fairly new place) but Arise on Rambuttri Road (next to KSR) has developed a serious reputation right from the start. This is probably the only venue you can see kids queuing up two or three hours before opening time. ‘Emocore’, ‘New York Hardcore’, ‘Hardcore’, ‘Extreme Metal’, and ‘Industrial Metal’ on offer here - lucky because my mother is coming to Bangkok and she loves industrial metal. Sunday night gigs seem to be the thing and entrance is free or a nominal charge depending on whose on. If you are local, get down there; if you are in town, well worth hunting out a genuine Bangkok scene. Info : 01-7500591, fight_tribe@yahoo.com

DEEP
Ten guys between the ages of 26 to 30 who used to hang out on Khao San Road every night suddenly realised that with the money they were spending and their love of nightlife, they would be better off clubbing together and opening a place themselves. That's what they did and the result is DEEP - a pretty cool place. More like the chill out room at a club, DEEP is pretty laid back. Comfortable local Thai student scene laps up two live bands per night doing accoustic sets, but music ranges from drums' n 'bass and pop rock depending on the time of day.

Open between 17:00 and 02:00, DEEP offers a range of Thai food, the cheapest dish coming in at 60 Baht, the most expensive coming in around 120 Baht - not bad at all. Snacks are available at around 50 Baht. A small Heineken costs 70 Baht and small Chang/Singha 60 Baht. Cocktails around 100 Baht. This is a good place - well worth a visit. Situated 3 minutes from Khao San Road opposite Swenson's ice-cream parlour. Foreigners often come in to see the art on walls - stop for a drink if you do!

Guiness problem solved...
For a number of years we have received email about the best place to get a Guiness on Khao San Road. Until know it's meant an off-road visit down to places like Sukhumvit or Silom. No longer... The Shamrock is an Irish theme bar on the second floor of Khao Sarn Center. It's nice too! The menu has a good range of different cuisines with Thai food coming in at 100-150 Baht a dish. A pint of Guiness is 180B!

Mizuho writes: "It was the first time my American boyfriend take me to Shamrock Pub! Yeah...i fell in love w/ its cool music and yummy drinks (>.<)"

Christoffer Larsson writes: "With the livebands playing every night it's probably the coolest place on KhaoSan right now. Mainly classic hits of Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Metallica, Linkin Park, etc...are played. No dance floor, but when hitting closing time everybody are dancing, the whole place is rocking and the atmosphere is great."

Lalita writes: "To Whom It May Concern, I have been living in Bangkok for two years, and Shamrock is my favorite place. The band there is amazing. So, would like to compliment all the band members that they're very good. Keep it up. I am sure many who listen would like the way i do. I will keep my supports for Shamrock and will go often and bring more customers to you. Lalita." Good on y'! Click here for more entertainment...

Bricking it!
Jon (jon@monsterfarm.co.uk) writes: "I've recently returned from a holiday in Thailand.. although we didn't stay on Khao San Road for long, we did enjoy several evenings at the Brick Bar.. Tucked away at the back of the building where McDonalds is, it's a bit more chilled out than most other places on the road, and has decent live music every night (I think?) - I think more people need to know about it because it was never very busy when we went, which is a shame because it's such a decent place..."

Thanks Jon - we wen't and found it to be a pretty cool place. The music isn't so load that you can't talk over it and the bands are superb - local bands playing local pop music. No covers - even better!

As they are part of the Buddy Lodge Group, the food they serve is straight from the Buddy Beer Bar upstairs - generally pretty good stuff. T-Bone steak with french fries and salad comes in at 250. A range of snacks are available, Spinach Salad comes in it at 100 Baht, Deep Fried Dried Pork comes in at 100 Baht. Good cocktails - an Americano costs 150 Baht, a B52 costs 200 Baht.

Under Buddy Lodge - try it. It's good!

If you are one of the old school, "The Club" is not the sort of place you would expect on Khao San Road! This place is as close to an architectural work of art as you are going to get... All bases have been covered here... From the same stable as Buddy Lodge, The Club is a vast European-style structure with an extremely high ceiling. During the day The Club is certainly the place to go for a bit of space away from the heat and the crowds. It doesn't matter how many people are there, the size of the place stops it getting crowded. You can enjoy an extensive menu offering good value European and Thai dishes. The Club boasts a pool table and one of the biggest TV screens you have ever seen - ideal for viewing football matches! However, The Club has two faces, and the relative calm of The Club during the day gives way to the more raucous side of its character in the evening. From 8:00 onwards there's a constant trickle of people, mainly young Thais. By 10:00 the place is rocking. Expect sounds, lightshows, and dancing. So popular, there's a 300 Baht entrance fee and, like everywhere else, the place closes at
2 a.m. A completely new angle on Khao San Road, and very much the shape of things to come... And that's not too bad a thing if the change is as good as The Club...

Indy Pub
Soi Rabutri

Outside pub right at the end of the alley that leads to Suzie Pub... Cheap alternative to the bigger bars... Pretty cheap beers (50 Baht) as well as spirits. Reggie music is the order of the day... Don't know what happens when it rains though!

"Been to Khao San Road for couple years, and saw loads of changes. But one thing that makes me wanna be back there is Immortal Bar. Before there just little pub on the back street of KSR, but when I came back last year there had moved to Bayon building. I love that place and the decoration the guys set it up, it'a pretty cool, though with big banner saying "WE ARE ASIA.." maybe some people gonna think these guys are racist... They aren't man, the music they play is much... much better than what I get in my country. The Hard Rock cafe in KL sucks man... a cover charge and they play GAY Music. But in Immortal I get what I want, good music with good people. Cheers man - keep it up like that."

"Just want to say how much fun my friends & I had at Immortal Bar the night before we left to come back to Australia. Wish we had of known about the club before our last night. The DJ was playing some of the best HipHop I have heard in a long while! It was also my first trip to Thailand and it won't be my last. I'm already planning my next trip there! "

Not officially opened yet... Grand Opening is coming up in a few weeks... They are warming the place up by offering free whisky! Hang around outside and a couple of lovely ladies will thrust a coupon on your person... There's no point fighting! A coupon entitles you to a free Sang-Som or Mekong - you pay for the mixer. Happy hour from 18:00 - 22:30. Worth a visit, although it currently appears to be a mainly Thai scene at present... Shows a lot of promise.
