Buddhist Lent…

Some travelers were left dazed and confused on Khao San Road yesterday as bars and restaurants stop selling alcohol for Buddhist lent. ThaiBuddhist.com provides a good description of Thai Lent… "'Khao Phansa', the Buddhist Lent is a time devoted to study and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October). " The first day is a national holiday and a day when Buddhist's flock to temples to make merit by offering stocks for the monks while they are in retreat, particularly candles, which are made on the temple grounds. The Bangkok local government even laid on free trams to get the faithful to the temples yesterday. Fortunately, for those who didn't venture the few hundred yards to see genuine Thai culture at Wat Chanat Songhkram at the end of Khao San Road, the Khao San Road Business Association brought candle making to the strip for all to see. Click here for more pictures of Wat Chanat Songhkram, Buddhist Lent 2008.

Veggie Delight…

Travelling in Thailand can be tough if you're a vegetarian. Your senses are constantly assaulted by the myriad of meats on sticks barbecued on every street corner and the scent of fried chicken fills the air as you wait patiently for a bus to whisk you away. This article points you in the right direction. Click here to find out more about Vegetarian Restaurants around Khao San Road and Bangkok, Thailand.

Democracy Monument Bus Number 556 - Suvarnbhumi - Southern Bus Terminal (Expressway) Bus No.556 connects Suvarnabhumi Airport to Southern Bus Terminal via Yommarat - Democracy Monument - Thammasat University - Pata Department Store - Southern Bus Terminal. Has Anyone Seen These?
"BANGKOK: -- From next month the city will keep 300 bicycles at Sanam Luang and five nearby areas that locals and tourists can use free of charge. Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said Monday that the "Green Bangkok Bike" project was aimed at promoting tourism with exercise and a "green mentality". The cycles will be loaned out from 10am to 9pm on weekdays and from 10am to 8pm on weekends. Initially, Thais will need to provide their ID card and foreigners will have to show their passports . Credit cards and smart cards will be soon used to borrow the bikes, which will also be installed with GPSbased tracking devices. -- The Nation 2008-06-30" Damned if I have seen them yet... Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in Bangkok…

June 4, 1986 - Grandmaster Flash at the Manchester Apollo… and Archie said: "Bloody 'ell - have you seen that black bloke playin' them record players? 'e don't have any guitars or 'owt". That my friends, unlike the late Tony Wilson would have it, was the launch of the DJ scene in the UK, not some obscure night at the Hacienda. What goes around, comes around - and he's here in Bangkok. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five at 808 Club on RCA, Bangkok 26 July 2008. That Red Bull Dude…

Khun Chaleo Yoovidhya was officially anointed Thailand's richest person by Forbes Asia Magazine this week. The maker of the world's favourite energy drink, Red Bull, racked up $4 billion, a 14% increase on last year. Hardly surprising really? With the support of the world's extreme sports enthusiasts (you know - those guys who fire up on caffeine, scream, and then hurl themselves off the nearest ridge) and an even greater legion of wannabes (those who simply drink the drink, have the hairstyle, and wear the baggy trousers), Red Bull is ripe for pop ulture immortality. What's Khao San Road's favourite present for people back home? That's right... a Red Bull t-shirt with lettering in the original Thai. Khun Chaleo, the world's youth salutes you!

Focus on Culture: Thai Superstitions and Beliefs...

When you have been in Thailand for a bit, you are inevitably going to confront Thai superstitions. A local gives you the benefit of his or her encyclopedic knowledge of the subject and offers a range of advice, including which Mor Doo (or Fortune Teller) to see for the best results. As a Westerner, you greet the occasion with a wry smile and store this little anthropological gem in the memory banks for storytelling over a couple of Singhas. When it happens three or four times and you realize that each time its over you leave for the bus stop, while the person you were talking to leaves in a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 or Ferrari Enzo F60, you start to wonder, "Is there something in this?" Kirsty Turner gives us the full SP with her Focus on Culture: Thai Superstitions and Beliefs.

Travis... In Bangkok

Sponsored by those rockers and rollers at the British Council, so this has to be good! Formed in Glasgow in 1991, Travis have become one of the UK's best-known rock bands, crafting down-to-earth, heartfelt songs in the vein of classic British bands from the 60s. This will be their first visit to Thailand and the concert takes place 29 July at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok Tickets: 6001,000/ 1,500/2,500/3,000 THB . For more information please call 02 262 3456, or visit ThaiTicketMajor. Be there or be square... or even both.

A Visit to the Immigration Office on Suan Phlu…
…isn't that bad really. They are pretty efficient and it's just something you have to do if you want to experience more of Thailand. However, if you are a vegetarian, you might even enjoy it. Click here for more about vegetarian immigration visits.

Information on Phuket as you have never seen it before...
In Russian! This description of Phuket, Thailand provided by Phuuket.com.

"What do you mean no flights?"
The slump in the global economy coupled with an increase in domestic fuel costs has forced one local carrier to reconsider options – in a bid to reduce costs, Nok Air has cut routes and management salaries. Similar story at One-Two-Go and Thai AirAsia. Let’s hope this doesn’t spread to long-haul… whoops. Spoke too soon. THAI is suspending its New York-Bangkok service while people like Lufthansa are thinking about reducing long-haul flights between Thailand and Europe. Is this the end of travel as we know it? Not a chance – travellers are resilient and you know where you’d rather be, right? At home on holiday, or here in Thailand? No contest, eh?

New Accommodation
If you are looking for the Khao San Road experience of lore, your will have to look high and wide to find somewhere on the actual strip these days. Sometimes you have to look a little further to see what things they way they were... Places catering for people on the move where they remember your name next time they see you! Taewez Guest House is further away from Khao San Road then most of the other guesthouses we feature, but it's still only a 30-minute walk through a pretty interesting neighbourhood to get there. Click here for more about Taewez Guest House.

RGB Band
I am not generally into cover bands, but The RGB Band that plays on KSR are definitely worth a visit. They bill themselves as "a live band made up of a few delinquents who manage to work stuff out". Click here for more on the RGB Band.

The Vegetarian's Guide to Thai Food... A beautiful asset to world travel is the chance to try exciting new foods. Of course, Thailand boasts a famous cuisine; healthy, full of exotic new flavours, intricately spiced. Any traveler worth his chopsticks will tell you it's some of the best in the world. But while most people can dive right in to local fare, tourists with dietary restrictions must weather a gamble each time they place an order. Click here for "The Vegetarian's Guide to Thai Food" by Anne Merritt.

New Accommodation
Elegantly designed with ambitious architecture, THE NAVALAI RIVER RESORT stands out against a backdrop of classical Thailand. The hotel is located in one of the country's leading historical areas, Phranakorn, meaning "The City" in Thai. This was first a centre of Thai trade 100 years ago. It is conveniently located for the Grand Royal Palace, and only 10-15 minutes' walk form Khao San Road. Situated right next to the river, access by river boat is easy - the hotel is right next to Phra Athit pier. You can walk straight into the hotel from the boat! This hotel has everything; luxury, convenience - and a rooftop swimming pool for your pleasure. Click here to check out Navalai River Resort.
