Books 'r' us
Harvey Taylor has a service that will be of interest to travellers and expats alike... A second hand book shop with a great range of books, and all are cheap! Thinking the price of second hand books was too high, Harvey set up Thaibrary. They have books on every subject (hardbacks as well) with most priced at around 180 Baht. By visiting their website (www.thaibrary.com) people can have a good look at what Thaibrary has available before a visit to the shop. All in all they have about 2000 titles and more than 3000 books in stock, with more constantly added. Check them out... Sounds good!

See-Uey's going to get you...
Irne (mutsabah@hotmail.com) writes: "Getting bored on a hot afternoon? No horror movie can satisfy you? Or are you simply pathology student? Get over to the macabre exhibition at Sirirat Hospital, Thonburi. Two floors of nothing but pictures of dead people (corn machine/boat motor/murder/suicide victims, etc.) and conserved freaks. The highlight of this bad taste gathering is the mummy of the famous Thai child eater See-Uey!" Cheers Irne - good suggestion. That's how I used to get my kids to bed - tell them that See-Uey was going to get them... It worked but now their therapy is costing an arm and a leg! The Songkran Miyomsane Forensic Medicine Museum is behind Siriraj Hospital on Phranock Road. It's free and open 09:00-16:00. Take the ferry from Phranock Pier - only 2 Baht!

Bangkok Poetry

Looking for something different to do? Why don't you rewrite your travel journal as a poem and go to 'About Studio/About Cafe' on Maitri Chit Road to tell people all about it... Yes - an open mike awaits you! Click here...

Night Bazaar

If you are heading downtown (Silom area) why not visit the Night Bazaar. Built on an old army cadet college, the Night Bazaar claims 3,400 shops and stalls selling everything you could dream of. As you can imagine, that many people selling their wares brings prices right down. Click here for the Night Bazaar website.

IMAX

Nakaporn (naka_nick@hotmail.com) writes in again: "If you are planning to go to Chatuchak Market and you have never been to an IMAX cinema, think about doing both on the same day. The IMAX cinema is close to Chatuchak - 120 Baht will get you there and back to Chatuchak by taxi, or take air-conditioned bus #63 or #13 - you won't miss it." Good idea Nakaporn. IMAX is a 3D treat that doesn't cost a lot - 150 Baht per person. Must be one of the cheapest in the world. For more information on the IMAX in Bangkok click here and here. Address: Krung Thai IMAX Theatre 1839 Pahnoyothin Rd. Ladyao, Jatuchak Bangkok 10900 Thailand - in Bangkok phone: 02-511-5555.

Bobae / Pratunam Market

Here's one from Juliana Neo (Juliana.Neo@virginmobile.com.sg): "Hi there, I am wondering where the clothes/sandals/shoes/bags wholesalers are in Bangkok, apart from the ones at Bobae, Chatuchak & Pratunam... Rgds, Juliana, Singapore" Good question - anyone know? If so, drop us an email too. In the meantime, if you are one of the legions who contemplate an import-export business when you get home, here's some information on Bobae Market and Pratunam Market, probably the best places to buy cheap clothes in Bangkok.

Poetry at Siam Square

388 Cafe
Siam Square
2nd Floor of Siam Theatre

A new venue for poetry is taking shape at Siam Square. Tom Radzienda presents A Promise for Siam at 388 Cafe, Siam Square, 2nd Floor of Siam Theatre. The audience is invited to join in the performance by reciting their own favourite poems.

A Promise for Siam is Radzienda's search for the genuine essence of Siam by walking peacefully through forests, embracing islands at dawn, seeking humanity in the cities and meeting the hearts of the people. Truly knowing Siam means hearing the voices of children and dreams of youth, learning the language, the customs, the contradictions and the confusion.

Radzienda presents poetry to awaken experience of the arts in a Bangkok that often seems deaf to reason and sense. Join the poetry recital and enliven your own sense of wonder and appreciation for a world beyond materialism.

About the Poet Tom Radzienda lectures in poetry, culture and journalism in the Faculty of Humanities at Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok. He has collected a lifetime of poetic and cultural experience through travelling in Africa, Asia, Down Under, Europe and North America. His second poetry collection, A Promise for Siam, reflects his observations and experiences in Thailand since settling In Bangkok in 1992. His poetry column, Poet's Post, appears weekly at www.bangkokpost.net/poetry

Check it out! It certainly sounds different for Thailand...

Sport of kings... and backpackers! (24 November 2001)

Self-confessed 'Sad Bastard' Danny Jones from Manchester in the UK (dannyjones70@hotmail.com) tells us this: "A good place to people watch; Bangkok races. A Saturday afternoon picking winners with 20,000 locals screaming and shouting. Cheap entrance fee, great local food, cold beer - even if the races isn't your thing, it's a must to have a look at the people of Bangkok at play. Royal Ascot it isn't, interesting, and safe, it is!"

And that's EXACTLY the sort of stuff we are after... something a bit different that'll get you in touch with the real Thailand... Cheers, Danny... You're not that sad after all... Any more tips?

If you want you know about gee-gee racing, there are two courses in Bangkok, one is the Royal Turf Club of Thailand on Phitsanulok Road. Races are held every second Sunday between 12.30 am-6.00 pm. 50 Baht and 100 Baht to get in. Contact them on 280-0020-9. The Royal Bangkok Sports Club is on Henri Dunant Road. Races are held every second Sunday between 12.30 am-6.00 pm. 50 Baht, 70 Baht and 100 Baht to get in. Contact them on 251-0181-6.

Panthip Plaza
Petchburi Road
Bangkok

OK - So you are into computers. And, of course, coming from the 'first world' you know know more about computers than these locals do, right? Visit Panthip Plaza and think again. Panthip Plaza is IT heaven. Known as 'IT City' it's 5 floors packed with every conceivable peice of technology. There is nothing you can't buy here - I mean nothing. And with about a hundred outlets competing with each other, prices are rockbottom. A bit tricky to get to from Khao San Road. It's on Pectburi Road right next to the Indonesian Embassy. Probably best to leave your credit card at home the first time - there are two things that can happen when you go to Panthip; either you have saved so much money you've paid for your holiday, or you've spent so much money you'll have to cut your trip short!
