Shambara is a boutique hostel and pretty good it is too! It's a big, lovely Thai style house which has been converted into a guesthouse. A small number of rooms offer a genuine 'family' experience. Set in a nice garden, the downstairs restaurant offers a range of local cuisine. The rooms are nice - shiny gold bed covers! They have about 9 rooms and each one has been given a name and a concept - Khun (Crown Flower), Mai Li (Jasmine), etc. You have to have a look at the rooms to decide which concept you want, but they are basically single with fan up to double/twin with air-conditioning. Prices range between 250 and 500 Baht. Located between VS Guesthouse and Ham Guesthouse at the 'Burger King' end of Khao San - you will see a small road going behind the shops on the left. It is down there.

Then stay at the Harn House just off Khao Sarn Rd. along the little Soi that runs behind Khao Sarn on the far end from the police station. The rooms are standard fare, nothing really special in that regard - prices vary between 100 Baht for a small room with fan and no window, to 500 Baht for a great little self-contained private room at the back with its own entrance. The very best thing about this place is the level of honesty employed by the owner/manager of this place. Her name is Sumana and she runs a safe and secure place. You can count on this woman's word being iron clad. The place is sometimes a little run down but Sumana makes up for any deficiencies with who she is and how she treats her guests.”

There is no evidence that Marco Polo actually came to Khao San Road. However, if he was on Khao San Road right now and looking for budget accommodation, this is the place he would choose! One of the original Khao San guesthouses and definitely old school. Clean and functional rooms at reasonable prices for somewhere right on KSR. Rooms are air-conditioned with adjoining bathrooms and room prices are easy to remember: 300 Baht a night or 250 Baht a night. What’s the difference? 300 Baht rooms have hot water.
